What is 5-3-1?

5-3-1 for Healthy Kids is a Connecticut statewide initiative developed by a coalition of organizations and agencies whose primary purpose is to promote wellness. The purpose of 5-3-1 for Healthy Kids is to help Connecticut residents take the first step in putting the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) My Pyramid into ACTION!

5-3-1 is the first step to following the USDA’s My Pyramid Dietary Guidelines. It is a great beginning to a healthier lifestyle.

It’s a good place to start!
Every day children should aim to meet the 5-3-1 for Healthy Kids Guidelines:

Strive for 5 cups of fruits and vegetables
Eat and drink 3 servings of low-fat dairy products
Be active for 1 hour per day

The concept of 5-3-1 for Healthy Kids was created to simplify the nutrition and physical activity messages that children and adults are being encouraged to follow.

Unfortunately, many people are not familiar with the details of the past or present Dietary Guidelines. “5-3-1” focuses a few of the major shortcomings in the American diet and lifestyle choices.

5-3-1 Stands for…

5small 5-9 servings of Fruits and Vegetables each day

3small 3 servings of Dairy each day

1small 1 hour of Physical Activity each day   jumprope

Why focus on these three guidelines?

Most people do not meet the recommendations for dairy, fruits, vegetables or physical activity.  Including additional servings of fruits, vegetables and dairy can be simple as well as nutritious and delicious. Being more physically active on a daily basis is one of the most important things people can do for their health.
